Leanne Harvey: Review of Jarhead

Leanne Harvey
Jarhead

I went and saw Jarhead Saturday night after I got off work, rushing to get there worried that it was going to be sold out. We decided to go to the late movie showing so we were sure to get a seat considering we showed up 10 minutes before the other started. As I sat waiting for this movie to start it was interesting to hear what people were talking about. The theatre was packed full of people and everyone was talking about the movie and what they were expecting. It seemed that most were expecting a shoot them up blow up movie like some of the other typical war movies. None of which this movie was.

I personally loved the movie. It was very different then what I thought I was going to be. Yes it was about the war and you got to see what happens over as far as the soldiers and what they did but no sides were really taken. It was just about Tony and his journey of becoming and being a marine. It was a very interesting aspect to take on a war movie. During the movie when Tony walks over to go to the bathroom while they are in the desert the film is completely silent and I have never once been in a theatre that was so quiet. Not one person was saying anything and I swear that everyone even stopped eating their candy and popcorn it was so quiet. To me if felt like everyone was so into the movie and actually was in a way showing respect to the soldiers. It was the weirdest but really neat feeling.

When we were walking out of the movie not many people even talked it was really odd. Everyone just filed out in silence. While I was on my way home I got a phone call from a friend that had seen it the showing right before Angie and I and she called to see our reaction and if we liked it. Her boyfriend and she were still sitting around talking about it trying to figure out if they really liked it and here Angie and I were sitting there with and instant liking for the movie. Kristina just went on to say it was not what she expected and she saw no real story or sides taken it was just about Troy’s journey. Which is exactly what it was? I think that they were expecting so much more they were disappointed when they did not get that. I can see this movie being one of those movies that you either like or don’t like. Just like most war movies but for a different reason.
